POEM BY TONY FERNANDES
Of seminal islander Chorao,
Goa.
Of DNA, heritage,
sensibilities
Of Mandovi riverine
backwaters
Across the Konkan coast…the
Indian ocean…
To the diaspora Goan of East
Africa
Born and raised
With a capricious dice roll
of disintegrating Empire
With the unsettling,
catalytic winds of change
Of family and futures to
fore…
To new beginnings on
England’s shores
Where this journey,
temporal-corporeal, now ends
Still your life’s ‘fruit’
tree, branches, flourishes infinite….
Forever indebted to all the
beauty, you touched,
created and extended
Within and without prejudice
The sunflower magic of
signature love, warmth and kindness you bestowed
Fare ye well good lady
Rock steady to the tiller; of
indelible legacy,
of humble contribution…
A life munificently lived
Now, unto the beauty of
freedom and spirit released….
To destiny.
To fly and flow in the
universe
Free
As you were ultimately, meant
to be…..
TRUE LOVE
A beautiful tribute to a remarkable woman.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely lady and wonderful cousin she was...her memories are with us...not only spirit but also in all the little things she used to do! Love
ReplyDeleteThe last farewell of Elsie Maciel turned out to be a memorable event. From that fateful day, 10th April 2020, of her death, Mervyn received multitudes of fond messages and tributes from relatives, friends and well-wishers far and wide. Especially noteworthy were the messages from old colleagues & friends from Kenya's distant Northern Frontier where Mervyn & Elsie were stationed for a number of years. It is wonderful that they were remembered after so many years.
ReplyDeleteElsie & Mervyn were not just a pleasant and placid Goan couple. They were actively involved in the community. Elsie had acquired skills in pottery making and also excelled at Goan delicacies like pickles and samosas. These were displayed and offered for sale at Goan Festive Days. Elsie also wrote her well known Cookery Book in 1983 (I have a copy), a first among its kind. Mervyn in turn took to writing books on themes related to his work and community.
The Goan Community has every reason to be proud of this couple and their achievements.
